So the Obi Fernandez CD release show was awesome. Soul Rebel Project was tight but didn’t quite move me, Riki Rocksteady was a blast, and of course Obi Fernandez KILLED it. They played mostly new stuff, as far as I could tell, some Westbound Train tunes, and some great covers. Specifically, they opened with a sick rocksteady version of “The KKK Took My Baby Away.” Obi was giving out download cards for his new record. Stream it on Spotify or buy it directly from Paper + Plastick (it’s worth it to buy it, and purchases are without a doubt, better for the artist). And of course now I’m all the more stoked for The Aggrolites on Tuesday.
Here are some Boston-area ska news bits to chew on:
- Tickets for The Mighty Mighty Bosstones Hometown Throwdown 15 went on sale last Friday. They play December 29, 30, and 31 at House of Blues Boston. Tickets haven’t sold out yet and no openers have been announced. I’ll be there on the 29th! Buy your tickets here.
- Big D & The Kids Table are writing new tunes. I feel like they just put out a new record…
- [The] Allstonians are playing at TT the Bears November 3 and at Great Scott on December 12 to celebrate 20 years! And there might be a new record on the way? Also, they lost their website domain, allstonians.com, which totally sucks.
- SuperSka plays November 9 at Club Bohemia at the Cantab Lounge. I’m down for some classic ska covers.
- I’m putting together a twitter list of Boston ska-related (I hate this word) tweeps. Tell me who else should be on the list!
- Looks like tickets are still available for The Toasters on November 3 at Johnny D’s. No, I haven’t bought mine yet. Ugh.
- As I hinted in my last post, I’m trying to put a band together. I’ve got more details in a craigslist ad.
